He enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, 21st September 1914, stating his occupation as a soldier, and his next of kin as his father, Walter Tinsley, of Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire. He had previously served with the 4th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, and the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was five feet nine and three quarter inches in height, had a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He also had a tattoo of a flying dragon on his right forearm.
